Text Manipulation Commands

Linux has some great command line tools. These ones excel at text manipulation.

awkPerform functions on text arranged in fields
cutExtract specific columns from lines of text
diffPerform a line by line comparison of two text files
expandConvert tab stops to spaces
exprExtract part of a string from another string.
fmtA simple paragraph formatter
grepExtract lines of text from a file containing a certain text string.
headDisplay the first n lines from a file
lexPerform lexical analysis of a text stream

pasteConvert a single text column into multiple columns
roffText formatter
sedNon interactive text line editor
sort 
tail 
testCompare two strings for equality
trReplace selected characters in a file
wcCount the number of lines, words, or characters in a file.
