Quicken won't recognise printers

What to do when Quicken won't recognise printers.

Unable to verify active printer at the system level

Symptoms: You receive an message that your computer cannot verify a printer.

Possible Cause: This error may occur if you have an excessive number of printers installed on your computer or Quicken has incorrect information about your printer. The following information shows you how to correct this error.

Solution

If you are using Quicken 2009, make sure you have the latest release before trying the steps listed below.

  1. From the Windows taskbar, choose Start menu > Settings > Printers and Faxes.
  2. Right click one of the printers you no longer need, and then select Delete.
  3. Click OK or Yes to the confirmation prompt.
  4. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to remove all printers you no longer use.

If you still cannot print, Quicken may have incorrect information about your printer. The following procedure shows you how to refresh this information.

  1. Close Quicken.
  2. Rename the wpr.dat file:
    • Windows XP
      1. Right-click the Windows Start button, and select Explore.
      2. From the Tools menu select Folder Options.
      3. Click the View tab and select Show hidden files and folders (located under Files and Folders > Hidden Files and folders.
      4. Click OK.
      5. Double-click Local Disk (C:) > Documents and Settings > All Users > Application Data > Intuit>Quicken>Config.
      6. Right-click on wpr.dat and select Delete.
      7. Reopen Quicken.
    • Windows Vista
      1. Right-click the Windows Start button, and select Explore.
      2. Select the Organize menu, and select Folder and Search Options.
      3. Click the View tab and select Show hidden files and folders (located under Files and Folders > Hidden Files and folders.
      4. Click OK.
      5. Double-click Local Disk (C:) > ProgramData> Intuit> Quicken> Config.
      6. Right-click on wpr.dat and select Delete.
      7. Reopen Quicken.

Note: The wpr.dat file contains your printer setup information for Quicken. If you have customized fonts or other printing options you will need to configure Quicken again.
